The McDowell County Sports Hall of Fame began 2011 as a way to Honor outstanding Athletes who came from McDowell County and went on to do well in college and/or professional sports. It also recognizes individuals who have given their time and talent as coaches and supporters of McDowell County high school teams. The Hall of Fame was started by the Lions Club and Wayne Hicks. Mr. Hicks was an outstanding football player and coach. Mr. Hicks was inducted into the Concord College Hall of Fame.

There is a committee that are composed of members of former McDowell County High Schools and the two Current High Schools (Mt. View and River View) that select members from their former teams to be candidates to be voted on for possible induction into the McDowell County Sports Hall of Fame. The candidates are reviewed and 10-15 people will be selected from the candidates each year. The candidates are then invited to a banquet at Mt. View High School for the induction ceremony. The original McDowell County Sports Hall of Fame is housed in the Sterling Drive-In in Welch, WV but due to lack of space the McDowell County Sports Hall of Fame has expanded to the two local high schools, River View and Mt. View. Due to Covid-19 there has not been an induction to the McDowell County Sports Hall of Fame for the year of 2020 and 2021.
