The McDowell County Coal Miner Memorial, The Sandy River District Action Committee is a non- profit organization. SARDAC (as we are known) is responsible for the McDowell County Coal Miner Memorial, dedicated in 1992 for the coal miners of McDowell County. The statue has been nicknamed “Joe Coal”. Names have been engraved each year since the dedication in 1992.
