Panther State Forest and WMA

As Almost Heaven’s southernmost state forest, Panther State Forest occupies 26 acres within the 7,810 acres of the Panther Wildlife Management Area. Its heavily wooded surroundings offer a range of outdoor amenities from hiking, geocaching, scenic overlooks, to hunting and fishing. During the summer, visitors can cool off in the swimming pool or watch little ones splash in the wading pool. Picnic shelters are available to reserve and the Group Camp is perfect for family reunions and larger overnight gatherings.

Panther Creek is stocked seasonally with trout and is available to those with a valid WV Fishing License and adherence to creel limits. Panther State Forest and the surrounding Wildlife Management Area offer excellent opportunities for archery-only deer hunting. Panther is also known for the turkey and grouse hunting.

Proper WV Hunting License and adherence to season dates and bag limits are required. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATVs are not permitted in the State Forest or WMA. Rules and Regulations for the State Forest and WMA can be found at: https://wvdnr.gov/

Accommodations

Panther State Forest offers a quiet and isolated camping experience deep in the mountains of McDowell County. 6 rustic campsites are situated along a peaceful, babbling creek of the State Forest’s namesake, Panther Creek. Each campsite offers up to 28′ back-in space, 20-amp electric, and site 6 is ADA accessible. For those looking for a larger scale experience in our forest, the Panther Group Camp is a 4-H Camp bunkhouse-style accommodation. The Group Camp features an “upper building” and “lower bunk house”. The bunk house has a male and female wing separation, and can accommodate 60 guests with bunkbeds. The upper building offers a full kitchen, gathering area around a hand-laid stone fireplace, as well as additional overnight guest space. Perfect for your next family reunion or weddings! Reservations for the Group Camp must go through the Forest office, so please email or call.
