Elkhorn Inn & Theater

from $0

Welcome to the “Coal Heritage Trail” Elkhorn Inn! Whether you love fine dining, railfanning, fishing, ATVing, hiking, leaf-peeping, golf, history or just hanging out in the beautiful mountains, there’s plenty for you to enjoy at the Elkhorn Inn! Featured on CNN Travel, HGTV, and Speed Channel, we provide up to 30 guests with unique, historic lodging in 14 a/c guest rooms, and truly fine dining in the southern West Virginia mountains! Kids are welcome, and we’re pet-friendly too!

The historic “Coal Heritage Trail” building that is now the Elkhorn Inn was built by Empire Coal & Coke Company as their “Miner’s Clubhouse” in 1922. It was designed by the renowned architect Alex B. Mahood.

Restoring, living in, and maintaining this “Coal Heritage Trail” building is a wonderful, continuing adventure! HGTV’s two programs on us, “Building Character” and “ReZONED”, highlighted some of the interesting architectural details uncovered in the process of restoring the building, including the original tile floor in the two-tub bathroom, transom windows on guest room doors, the original hemlock banister and pay-window where the miners went to get their pay. Built to withstand fire, the only wood in the building is the trim on all 66 original 1922 windows! In 2008, Dan Clark was awarded the Coal Heritage Trail Preservation Award for his restoration of the Elkhorn Inn, which is the only surviving historic building in our area.

  3. Museum Museum Room at the Elkhorn Inn

The historic ”Coal Heritage Trail” Elkhorn Inn was built in 1922 by Empire Coal & Coke Company as their Miner’s Clubhouse, replacing two wooden buildings which burned down. As we have learned (and continue to learn) from our guests, many of whom lived in or worked in our building, our building served many purposes throughout the years, including being a rooming house for miner’s families, the Hawley Coal office, a police barracks, a nurse’s lodging house, and a document storage company! The Elkhorn Inn’s Museum Room features a growing collection of art, photography, books, scrip, documents, post cards, china, and historic memorabilia on the Empire Coal & Coke Company, Hawley Coal, Landgraff, coal mining, the Norfolk & Western and Norfolk Southern ”Pocahontas” railroad (which goes past the Inn), and McDowell County. Also on display are Builder Levy’s documentary photographs, Doug Wonders’ and Michael Shufelt’s rail photography spanning more than 25 years of the ”Pokey”, and Sean Hoyden’s railroad photography. If you have historic items you would like to donate, or to have us display, please email us or call us at 1 (800) 708-2040.

The Inn’s Gift Shop features hand-crafted West Virginia coal statuettes, hand-made silver, lamp-glass bead, and Elkhorn Creek-glass jewelry, pearls, vintage blown-glass ornaments, old-timey ”coal” candy”, locally made jams, jellies, and sauces, specialty ”foodie” items, stained glass windows and suncatchers by Richard Latshaw, signed books by James Porterfield and Homer Hickam, Elkhorn Inn embroidered-logo apparel, and one-of-a-kind ceramics, sculpture, and fine art. See our ”Gift Shop” page for more details and to order, or call us at 1 (800) 708-2040.

YES! There are 100s of miles of FREE trail throughout our county, as well as the famed Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, and it’s LEGAL to ride ATVs on our roads. So, you can ride your ATV from the Elkhorn Inn right to the trails! We have plenty of free parking next to the Inn, and a power washer guests can use, as well. We also store and maintain ATVs for our guests, so they can just jump on their quads and ride the minute the get to the Inn!

Fun places to ride to include up to “Miracle Mountain Wilderness Park”, which has a 1940s log cabin, an amazing view, picnic tables, and a koi pond (and the koi love Cheerios!), and up to Burke Mountain. You can even ride your ATV to the Black Wolf Links Golf Course! There are great picnic spots, as well as hamburger and BBQ stands along the way, too! And you can pick delicious wild ramps in the spring, wild blackberries all July and leaf-peep all fall through Halloween!

The nearest Hatfield McCoy Trailheads to the Elkhorn Inn are the Indian Ridge trailhead at Ashland; the Pocahontas trailhead at Bramwell, and the Pinnacle Creek trailhead at Pineville. For more information on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, and their rules and regulations, see www.trailsheaven.com

The Elkhorn Inn is in great fishing & hunting country: McDowell County, WV! We’ve got EXCELLENT catch-&-release trout fishing for brown and rainbow right at the Inn on Elkhorn Creek, which has been called THE best wild trout stream in the USA! Record-breaking 24″ – 32″ trout have been caught in our county, and our Trout Unlimited guests often catch between 30 and 150 fish a day! In addition, the county offers bow-hunting for deer, shotgun for turkey & bear, trout fishing at several stocked trout streams, & fishing on Anawalt and Berwind Lakes.

All you need to fish Elkhorn Creek is a West Virginia fishing license, which can be purchased online at WV DNR or at any Walmart in the state. As Elkhorn Creek is NOT stocked, we strongly urge “catch-and-release” fishing, and suggest chest-waders if you will fishing in the creek.
